CHAPTER 38

Jack sat in his car, drumming his fingers on his way back to his apartment. Driving on the wrong side of the road was becoming more familiar. He couldn’t believe his good luck. He had to admit the very notion of tripping her up seemed like a pipe dream.

He recalled the rest of the conversation verbatim. Being stuck in traffic made him go over every detail. It was somewhat disconcerting to hear her admit to any kind of wrongdoing when she had remained impassioned about her innocence, even though she was mocking him.

“What did you do?” Jack asked in that moment in front of the cell where she was temporarily trapped like an animal.

“Wouldn’t you like to know? Those stupid police officers thought that I was going to fall apart under the hot lights. It was fun making them chase their own tails. You would be surprised what crocodile tears will do to a strong and strapping young man,” she sobbed, with real tears streaming down her face.

“You’re pretty damn smug. I will give you that. What did they miss? It was ruled an accident. Nobody suspected foul play. I’m sure some had their suspicions, but nothing could be proven. There was no evidence to suggest you had anything to do with his untimely demise,” Jack continued to push the issue.

She was ego eccentric and capable of some amazing feats, but she was also human, in desperate need of validation from her peers. Under the influence made her susceptible to his questions.

“I wasn’t even on the boat when the accident happened. They couldn’t tie me to anything incriminating, no matter how hard they tried.” She tossed the flask through the bars without even touching them.

Jack caught it and stuffed it into the back of his jeans, away from prying eyes.

“They were just doing their job,” Jack defended the officers without even knowing all the details.

“Keep telling yourself that. They wanted me to be guilty. It would’ve made them happy to see me fall from my lofty pedestal from where I was looking down on them. They didn’t even let me talk to a lawyer for 24 hours. It was inhumane and against my Miranda rights. Some of them lost their jobs. It couldn’t happen to nicer guys,” she said.

“I can’t condone what they did during the investigation. It must’ve made them mad. You’re not exactly the easiest person to talk to,” Jack pointed out.

She sighed and stretched her arms over her head. “I’ve never been good with authority. Not everybody is guilty by association. Sometimes being in the wrong place at the wrong time can destroy lives. I’m not innocent. We can both agree on that.”

“You’re not going to get any argument from me. I know what you did. Nobody can prove it. Detective Creed is a good man. He didn’t deserve your smear campaign against him. It was pretty crafty to make him look flawed,” he spat it out with the venom of the words sickening him.

“Detective Creed is a rare breed of animal.
